On Friday afternoon, we will discover the importance of preparing your drums for recording. Shawn’s experience as a touring drum technician will help you understand the choices made before recording and how they impact your final results. Drum choice, head selection, tuning and dampening, cymbals and hardware, placement and highly guarded studio secrets will all be covered in this first half day.
Saturday’s class will cover the micing, setup and execution of the recording session. This will be everything from mic selection, mic placement, mic techniques, outboard gear choices and use, minimal micing vs. extravagant micing, phase and polarity, headphone mixes and finally Casey Cooper recording a song.
Sunday’s class will dive into the post production of the drum recording process. Comping, editing, sample creation and placement, creating midi from your recording, prepping for mixing and finally drum mixing techniques, covering routing and plug in choices for consistent results.

After opening his first recording studio in Winnipeg, Canada, at the age of 20, Shawn Dealey has built a successful career as a producer, mixer, engineer and front of house mixer. Among the many artists he has worked with are Counting Crows, Animals As Leaders, The Weakerthans, Bootsy Collins, Jared James Nichols, Jim Bryson and Julie Doiron (of Eric’s Trip). These days Shawn can be found at Sweetwater Studios in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where he is chief engineer across the company’s three-room studio complex.
Drummer Casey Cooper is the centerpiece of the popular COOP3RDRUMM3R YouTube Channel (currently at 2.7M subscribers). With experience in the studio and on stage, Casey is one of the most successful drumming instructors in history.
