About This Event

Michael will take you through his unique approach to mixing with emotion — his in-the-box “Brauerize©” technique featuring multiple bus compressors — for his signature sound. He’ll share his multi-parallel vocal compression approach to achieving intimate, engaging, and exciting vocals, and he’ll teach you how he keeps an open and creative mindset when diving into each new mix.

Michael’s signature sound can be heard on many hit records by artists such as Coldplay, John Mayer, the Rolling Stones, Luther Vandross, Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, My Morning Jacket, Ben Folds, Grizzly Bear, James Bay, Prefab Sprout, Leonard Cohen, Pet Shop Boys, Dream Theater, and Elle King, to name a few. We are excited to give you this opportunity to join Michael in the studio and learn his Grammy-winning techniques.

Michael Brauer

Michael Brauer’s career began at Mediaound Studios in New York City in 1976. He worked his way up from the shipping department to staff engineer by 1978. The staff engineers that Michael assisted were all the hottest guys in town, including Bob Clearmountain, Mike Barbiero, Ron St. Germain, Michael Delugg, Ed Stasium, Godfrey Diamond, Tony Bongiovi, and Harvey Goldberg.

Michael’s first big break came when he was asked to record and mix two songs with singer Luther Vandross for an R&B record called Change. Soon after, Luther approached him to record his upcoming solo album Never Too Much, which went on to become Gold. Michael became Luther’s engineer and recorded all his music for the next four years including two Aretha Franklin albums along the way.

In 1984, Michael flew over to London, where the music scene was exploding. He met some A&R people that were willing to give him a shot at production and remixing. Soon, he became in demand and worked for all the major London labels until 1990 when he decided to focus on the American scene.

He went on to mix such records as the Rolling Stones’ Steel Wheels, New Radicals’ Maybe You’ve Been Brainwashed Too, and Tony Bennett’s Grammy Album of the Year, MTV Unplugged. He’s received seven Grammys in total, including ones for Coldplay’s Best Alternative Music Album, Parachutes, as well as their Best Rock Album, Viva la Vida; John Mayer’s Best Pop Vocal Album, Continuum, as well as his Engineered Album, Non-Classical, Battle Studies; Calle 13’s Best Latin Rock, Urban, or Alternative Album, Multi_Viral, as well as their Best Urban Music Album (Latin Grammy), Calle 13; and Angélique Kidjo’s Best World Music Album, Eve.

In 2018, he opened his own studio, BrauerSound, in New York City’s Chelsea area. At the new studio, he began utilizing a hybrid mixing setup for the first time in his career, making the mixing process more powerful and efficient.

Recent projects of Michael’s include working with Zac Brown Band, Hootie & the Blowfish, Michael Kiwanuka, Slash, and The Courteeners.
